Rescue Complex aka Bailout Madness

Yesterday, the $700 billion dollar bailout was defeated. The economic “crisis” is weighing heavily on the presidential race, and on the minds of most average Americans. Just before the vote began, Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered a vitriolic speech that cost one dozen Republican votes. Moments later, Republican Leader John Boehner, along with Chief Deputy Whip Eric Cantor address a gaggle of reporters blasting Pelosi’s politically tone-deaf move.

The fact is this: if you want bipartisanship, don’t go to the floor and attack. The American people don’t like the bill. The bailout is unpopular. Speaker Pelosi once promised us that she would be the Speaker of the WHOLE House, for ALL Americans. After a week of working closely with Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, Barack Obama, Harry Reid and the President’s negotiators - the American people are not convinced. The defeat of this bill buoyed the House Republicans, steeled them for the ongoing fight.

After all those years in Washington, Speaker Pelosi should know better than to play with fire.

There sure are a lot of right wing idiots on this site. Looks like your free market deregulation chickens are coming home to roost. Let’s get rid of the rest of the laws and we can be like Somalia. Zero Taxes. Zero Laws. and if you have enough money you can own your own army complete with armored vehicles and machine guns. Yep, that is the country I want my kids to inherit.

    P. S. How’s that 401K retirement investment doing? Let’s all invest our social security money in the stock market so we can give it to the swindlers who run that place.

When the Republicans contolled the House, they used to run roughshod over the Democrats, often passing bills on party lines, with 2 or 3 members from each party crossing the line.

Now, the Democrats can’t get 94 members to follow the party line. This shows that the current Democrats aren’t as united as the GOP was, when it controlled the House.

Speaker Pelosi needs to do several things. First, she needs to address the Republican members and apologize for her partisan comments.

Second, she needs to admit that some, but certainly not all, of today’s problems were caused by actions during the Clinton Administration. Larry Lindsey said yesterday on CNBC that during his tenure on the Federal Reserved Board in the mid 90s, he helped write the regs that made it easier for banks to loan money for mortgages.

Third, and most importantly, she needs to get the 94 Democrats in the cloakroom and either slap them silly, in a figurative sense and not literally, or at least promise them extra campaign money, to get them to switch their votes.
