With the recent security scare at New York’s JFK airport, where the entire airport was evacuated due to a man slipping past security and then boarding his flight, it is clear that the TSA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security need to look at new security screening measures for our nation’s airports.
Jesus Mena, one of the nation’s leading experts on security and counter-terrorism measures and Chief Strategy Officer of InferX will be with us tonight to tell about new technologies that are available and capable of rectifying airport security problems and protecting national security.
Mena says it is time for a major change in policy at DHS, where management continues to rely on a centralizing method of screening of travelers rather than following the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Report which called for the creation of a “trusted information network” so that the government could “connect the dots” and prevent attacks such as those of six years ago. The 9/11 report clearly called for a decentralized method of protecting the country from future attacks, while DHS continues in the path of a centralized model.
Mena is instrumental in the development of solving security and advanced data mining problems without infringing on personal security. His company, InferX, has the unique ability to detect changes in patterns and raise red flags for potential terrorist activity.
As an author of four books on terrorism, data mining and analysis, Mena was previously an expert consultant to the US Office of Inspector General, Department of Homeland Security, where he made recommendations for a 2007 comprehensive report.
